Jose or Joel ...

My name is Joel Basa...but my official name is Jose Manuel Basa. How do you get Joel from my official name? It's quite simple actually. Here we go.

(Jose - se) + (Manuel - Manu) = Joel

Country City Boy...

I grew up in the Finger Lakes Region of the NY. I was raised in a small town but always gravitated towards Major Metropolitan areas. I feel comfortable tending my own garden and doing some woodworking but feel equally comfortable catching the 4,5,6 train in Manhattan. With all this said, I'm currently located in Rochester, NY. It's neither small town and it is definitely not big city. After graduating from RIT, I never thought I would of ended up staying in Rochester long-term but I'm still here. The city has definitely grown on me.

In The Beginning...

My interest to become an interactive developer started out my junior year in high school. My sister and I started building fan web sites for some of our favorite bands (Freddy Jones Band and From Good Homes). We tought ourselves everything we knew. We were introduced to Photoshop and HTML and as they say, the rest is history. In time, our site generated so much traffic that were asked to become the official sites of each respective band. I went on to study Information Technology at RIT and my sister has since become a great Graphic Designer. Take a glance at my resume...

Other Tidbits...

I love my sports. I'm one of those guys that will try just about any sport but I don't claim to be "great" at one. If I were to call out two sports that I'm pretty good at, they would have to be basketball and tennis. I workout on a regular basis and love to play in pickup basketball games whenever I have a chance. I'm a big fan of the New York Knicks and the Syracuse Orangemen. I've always dreamed of landing a front-office job for an NBA team and I think I would be very good at it. .Tennis-wise, I have an appreciation for how good Roger Federer makes tennis look so easy and effortless. I regularly watch Sportscenter and visit ESPN.com more often than I should. I'm also a big fan of PTI and Around The Horn.

I also have a passion for something people either love or despise: GRASS. I'm talking about the grass in your lawn. I have always had a fondness for a nicely manicured lawn and garden and take pride in the work I do at my house in Rochester. I also have a green thumb but only for outdoor plants. I'm terrible with house plants and have the evidence to prove it all the time.

Bark, Bark, Bark...

Another interest I have are my canine friends. My best friend is Prince, a 6-year old Shetland Sheepdog. Prince is a great listener and we compete in AKC Agility Competitions around the Rochester Area. Dog Agility is something that benefits both Prince and I. We have so much fun with it. I've made a bunch of agility equipment at home for Prince and I to practice with. I currently am the Webmaster for the DOTCORNY, our local dog training club here in Rochester.

What's To Eat???

Cooking is another passion I have. I cook as many Filipino dishes as I can learn but I also can hold my own with Italian food and some Thai and Chinese food. If you have a good recipe, I'm always willing to give it a shot and I'll usually try to add my own twist to it. As a Filipino, you'll always see my kitchen stocked with Garlic, Onions and Tomato as well as a great bottle of Patis (fish sauce).

Last But Not Least ...
